What Happened to the Retail Store Experience?

Malls aren’t dinosaurs, and neither are retail stores.  The pains of retailers are real and can be attributed to many factors:  too many stores (PacSun), not keeping up with the trends of teens (Aeropostale), outdated stores (Sears), the rise of Amazon (Walmart), the disinterest of millennials (all stores). But the one aspect of a brand that retailers can control is the shopper’s experience.
A recent business trip to Los Angeles brought me to six shopping centers and three marquee retail neighborhoods.  Parking lots were full, and everywhere was gobsmacked with people.  However, the shopping trip, itself, was lackluster for the most part.

Charm meets beauty and and is then sold in a store: the essence of Monica Rich Kossan. Monica’s jewelry had been exclusive to renowned retailers such as Bergdof Goodman, Neiman Marcus, and Mitchell’s until fall 2016 when the jewel box debuted at Time Warner Center in Manhattan. The charming shop is a fantasy land of lockets, bracelets, earrings, and rings, meant to layer and stack for a playful, fun fashion-forward look. The baubles also tell stories whether one chooses to engrave a message on-site or through some of the unique charms. It’s hard not to fall in love with Monica’s unique jewelry and impossible to walk out of her store empty-handed.
