Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is a $20 billion development on the west side of Manhattan, creating a city-within-a-city appealing to this ever-growing, affluent residential area, thousands of office executives, and millions of tourists.  This 30-acre site will feature an Elkus Manfredi-designed retail project that will be anchored by the world’s most luxurious department store, Neiman Marcus.  In spring 2015, Soozan Baxter Consulting was retained to help with the leasing efforts for this ground-up project, joining a small team from Related Companies, putting together a best-in-class collection of fashion favorites.  The first phase, comprised of more than 11 million square feet of office, retail, residential, hotel, and cultural space, will open in 2018.


What Happened to the Retail Store Experience?

Malls aren’t dinosaurs, and neither are retail stores.  The pains of retailers are real and can be attributed to many factors:  too many stores (PacSun), not keeping up with the trends of teens (Aeropostale), outdated stores (Sears), the rise of Amazon (Walmart), the disinterest of millennials (all stores). But the one aspect of a brand that retailers can control is the shopper’s experience.
A recent business trip to Los Angeles brought me to six shopping centers and three marquee retail neighborhoods.  Parking lots were full, and everywhere was gobsmacked with people.  However, the shopping trip, itself, was lackluster for the most part.

Bandier is the ultimate fitness fashionista’s paradise. Workout women will love the assortment of brands (think Intermix goes to the gym), offering brands like Alo, Stella McCartney, and Spiritual Gangster.  This store is not for workout posers, offering tops for the Flywheeler or downward dogger, a staff that knows the pros and cons of each brand, and a constant new selection to keep shoppers coming back.  Bandier launched in Manhattan and has a store in the Hamptons, but more are slated to open in 2015 and 2016.
